Job Title: Lecturer

Main Function:
- To be responsible for research, teaching, community service and supervision of undergraduate dissertation.
- The Lecturer shall provide academic direction of courses, including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration. Lecturers without PhD/Doctorate Degrees are also expected to pursue their graduate studies leading to PhD Degree which will enable them progress in their academic career.
Note: In addition to the functions specified in this document, the staff is required to carry out other duties as may be reasonably required or undertake any other function as would be determined by the Dean or Management of the Faculty/School/Institute
Accountable to: Head of Department (HoD)
Liaise with: Research Coordinator and Director of Academic Affairs
Minimum Qualifications: PhD/Doctorate/M. Phil. Degree in relevant field with at least two (2) years teaching experience in relevant field and relevant publications.
Staff Responsibilities: Shall see to the development of teaching and learning outcomes, teaching plans and other administrative or supportive duties that would be assigned by the Provost, HoD or Management in pursuance of the mission and vision of the Institute.
Key Tasks
- Ensure that teaching plans are submitted to the office of the HoD and uploaded on the DI CourseWare at least three (3) weeks before the beginning or the semester/trimester. This must include the course description, teaching and learning outcomes, objectives, sub-topics in a weekly outline, resources required (notes, videos, etc) and assessment mode.
- Must organize Continuous Assessment and Class attendance and Participation (40%) comprising any two of the following: a seminar presentation, field reports, a written test and a term paper. There could also be book reviews book summaries and critiques. The Lecturer is also required to conduct an end of semester examination with a total score of 60%. In some MA/MPhil courses the lecturer may require the submission of a 5,000-word paper in lieu of the final end of semester examination.
- Have a minimum of twelve (12) hours and a maximum of eighteen (18) hours a week lecturing.
- Must submit to the Head of Department/Coordinator end of semester/trimester reports indicating observations made during course facilitation and recommendations for improving teaching and learning.
- Should as much as possible recommend text books in the library and the Daniel Institute bookshop and where the books are not available, liaise with the Librarian to discuss possibilities of making them available.
- Be responsible for marking, recording, and grading of all student assignments and examinations in line with the Central University laid down procedures. Where required by the Institute, the Lecturer must be available for the conference marking sessions of the Institute.
- Supervise thesis/dissertations
- Play an active role in any other relevant areas of work undertaken by the Institute.
- Research and publish at least two peer reviewed articles each year and a peer reviewed book every three years.
- Be actively involved in public service and Church activities if not a pastor.
- Must have international connections.
General
As a staff of Daniel, a Lecturer is required to:
- Keep himself/herself informed about developments and best practices in his/her area of activity and apply such information to the benefits of the Institute as may be appropriate.
- Play active an active role in the one of the Societies of the Institute as Advisor of Students.
- Get actively involved in student recruitment.
- Promote and implement the spirit and intention of the Institute’s mission statement and to comply with the entire Institute’s policies and supporting procedures.
- Make positive efforts to promote his/her own personal development and safety and that of others by taking reasonable care at work, by carrying out the requirements of the Statutes and Conditions of Service or any other Institute’s Codes of Practice or Management directives as recognized or provided for or advised by Management to ensure safe working practices
- Observe the highest ethical standards in the discharge of his/her duties.
- Observe, maintain and promote quality standards in accordance with the policy and continuously strive to improve the quality of work output.
- Undertake ad-hoc duties and/or hours of work as may be required by the demands of the job.
